SEASON AT A GLANCE: Fletcher, who finished second in the 100 meters and third in the 200 in the 1997 state championships, is undefeated against high school competition during the outdoor season.
WEEK AT A GLANCE: Fletcher won the 100 in a wind-aided 10.44 seconds and the 200 in a wind-aided 21.32 in the Northridge-Alemany Relays at Cal State Northridge on Saturday after winning the 200 in a hand-timed 22.0, the 400 in 50.6 and anchoring Alemany’s victorious 400 relay team against Crespi on Thursday. He defeated Long Beach Poly’s Darrell Rideaux (10.46) and Notre Dame’s Justin Fargas (10.60) in the 100 at Northridge. Rideaux finished third in the state final last year, won by Fargas. “I like the competition,” Fletcher said. “It makes you run faster. It makes you compete better.”
GIRLS
Karina Siam
SCHOOL: Alemany
SPORT: Basketball
YEAR: Freshman
SEASON AT A GLANCE: Siam has served as a perfect complement to All-Southern Section guards Kelli Kobayashi and Kate Beckler. The 5-foot-10 freshman center-forward averaged 10.2 points and six rebounds to help the Indians win their first section title since 1994. Siam has played some of her best basketball in the playoffs. She scored 21 points in against Pomona in the III-AA semifinals and 14 against La Puente in the final.
WEEK AT A GLANCE: Siam tied a Southern Regional Division III recordby making nine free throws in Alemany’s 50-45 victory over Harvard-Westlake, a Mission League rival. She finished with a game-high 19 points to help Alemany advance to its first state final.
