Money Approved for River Park Plan

Backers of the proposed Orange Coast River Park this week received a financial boost for their plan.
The Costa Mesa City Council allotted $5,000 for a feasibility study of the proposal to create a park through that city, Newport Beach and Huntington Beach. Those cities are expected to contribute the same amount and the county, $10,000.
Friends of Harbors, Beaches and Parks, with membership in all areas, proposes patching together existing parks with undeveloped public and private land to create a 1,000-acre park that would wind through three cities.
Included in the proposal are Talbert Nature Reserve in Costa Mesa, Huntington Beach wetlands and reconditioned oil fields. Each existing park would retain its name, and each city and the county would control land within its jurisdiction.
The chief benefit is to create a cohesive vision for what little open space is left on the coast and to qualify for federal funds that only big parks receive.
