Arizona assistant Phil Johnson was given the task of rebuilding San Jose State, which had a 3-23 record this season. Johnson, 40, replaces Stan Morrison, who resigned after nine seasons. . . . Mark Gottfried was officially named the new coach at Alabama. Gottfried was expected to sign a five-year contract worth about $400,000 per year, including incentives, to leave Murray State. He replaces David Hobbs, fired during a 15-16 season. . . . Bob Williams, 44, who coached UC Davis to the NCAA Division II national title last weekend, was hired as coach at UC Santa Barbara. He replaces Jerry Pimm.
