Retired General Quits as Head of Schools

Julius W. Becton Jr., a retired general drafted to run the District of Columbia’s troubled public schools, said he will quit at the end of the school year. “Physically, emotionally, mentally, I’m tired,” Becton, 72, said at a news conference. Mayor Marion Barry Jr., however, said Becton “was the wrong person for this job . . . schools are worse off today than they were a year ago.”
