Juan Diaz Earns Writing Award

Student Juan Diaz has won Orange Coast College’s writing competition with a humorous essay on El Nino and a satiric piece on spousal battery.
“The Child’s Subterfuge on the Winter Storm” and “And the Rest Is Written in Book of Shove,” on abusive relationships, won the art major the $500 first prize.
Diaz lives in Fountain Valley and hopes to transfer to an art college in the Los Angeles area.
Second- and third-place awards went to Jennifer Rice and Lynn Vogt, both of Costa Mesa, winning $350 and $300 respectively. Rice won for her analysis of the William Butler Yeats poem, “On Hating Writing.” Vogt analyzed the work of short- story master and novelist Flannery O’Connor.
