LOCAL NOTES

Villa Park High’s Erick Helenihi, one of the top middle blockers in the nation, and Orange Coast middle blocker Josh Richardson have signed letters of intent to play volleyball at UC Irvine.

Helenihi, who is 6 feet 9, led the Spartans (18-1) to a Century League title. Richardson, 6-5, was the co-most valuable player in the Orange Empire Conference. He is from Newport Harbor High.

Mark Murphy, a 6-2 guard from Glendale (Ariz.) College, has signed to play basketball for Cal State Fullerton, Titan Coach Bob Hawking said.

Murphy averaged 23.2 points last season and was second in scoring in the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference. He was a first-team all-conference pick.
