FIRST QUARTER
- Share via
LAKERS 39, SUPERSONICS 22
* Highlight Reel: Go ahead, dim the lights and scream the introduction of the lineup above the bedlam at KeyArena. The pregame hysteria doesn’t change the fact that the SuperSonics still can’t measure up to the Lakers. Witness ancient Sam Perkins starting at center instead of lumbering galoot Jim McIlvaine.
* What You Won’t Find in the Box Score: Whatever got into Laker forward Rick Fox, who snapped to life after going largely unnoticed in the series.
* Winning Number: Fox was four for four on three-point baskets.
* Wrong Number: The Lakers’ 79% shooting meant big trouble for Seattle.
* Leading Scorers: Lakers--Fox 12; SuperSonics--Vin Baker 10.
* Leading Rebounders: Lakers--Robert Horry 5; SuperSonics--Baker 3.
SECOND QUARTER
LAKERS 62, SUPERSONICS 50
* Highlight Reel: Baker here, Baker there, Baker everywhere. Well, he had nowhere else to go but up after saying he let down his teammates after the first quarter of Game 4. Best move of the quarter was Baker’s fallaway basket off the glass over Shaquille O’Neal.
* What You Won’t Find in the Box Score: A pulse from the SuperSonics, who rallied early in the quarter to make a game of it.
* Winning Number: The Lakers’ 12-point halftime lead was remarkable considering Seattle’s 12-0 run earlier in the quarter.
* Wrong Number: Seattle’s 12-0 run was bad news for the Lakers, who no doubt were hoping to put away the SuperSonics early and start resting for the next round.
* Leading Scorers: Lakers--Nick Van Exel 7; SuperSonics--Baker, Gary Payton 10.
* Leading Rebounders: Lakers--Corie Blount, Horry 2; SuperSonics--Baker 2.
THIRD QUARTER
LAKERS 86, SUPERSONICS 76
* Highlight Reel: Van Exel saved the Lakers’ double-digit lead with a three-point basket in the final minute. The Lakers were on the brink of losing their momentum. Despite playing several reserves, including Kobe Bryant (remember him?), they were able to maintain control.
* What You Won’t Find in the Box Score: Payton woofing at Bryant after a foul, a certain sign of Seattle’s frustration. Payton had been calm, cool and collected in the series until blowing his top at Bryant.
* Winning Number: A 10-point lead was the jolt the Lakers needed.
* Wrong Number: Thirteen Laker turnovers after the third quarter.
* Leading Scorers: Lakers--O’Neal 8; SuperSonics--Jerome Kersey 10.
* Leading Rebounders: Lakers--O’Neal 4; SuperSonics--Detlef Schrempf 4.
FOURTH QUARTER
LAKERS 110, SUPERSONICS 95
* Highlight Reel: “Seinfeld” fans rejoice. There will be no Game 6 at the Great Western Forum and you can watch the sitcom’s finale on Thursday. The Lakers’ must-see TV continues Saturday against the Utah Jazz. O’Neal’s eighth blocked shot--on Hersey Hawkins--sealed the deal.
* What You Won’t Find in the Box Score: Chick Hearn put the game and the series in the refrigerator with the Lakers ahead, 105-93, with two minutes left.
* Winning Number: O’Neal’s 31 points and nine rebounds.
* Wrong Number: O’Neal’s 31 points and nine rebounds. Seattle had no way to stop him.
* Leading Scorers: Lakers--Jones, O’Neal 7; SuperSonics--Schrempf 6.
* Leading Rebounders: Lakers--Van Exel 3; SuperSonics--Baker 3.
