In response to severe storms that walloped the state this winter, 2,104 Ventura County residents applied for federal disaster aid by the May 8 deadline, officials said Wednesday.
Registration began Feb. 9 when President Clinton, at the request of Gov. Pete Wilson, declared 29 California counties eligible for assistance. The disaster declaration was later expanded to 41 counties.
So far, more than $80 million in disaster aid has been doled out in the state, with more than $5 million going to Ventura County.
The total includes housing assistance for those forced from their homes, low-interest business loans and money for local governments to repair roads and flood channels, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Statewide, the grants and loan payments include $38.7 million in Small Business Administration loans, $21.8 million in disaster housing assistance, $3.3 million in individual and family grants and $21 million in aid to local governments.
More than half of the 74,506 Californians who registered for aid live in Los Angeles County. Contra Costa and San Bernardino counties had totals similar to those in Ventura County.
