Dennis Shearer, assistant girls’ basketball coach at Louisville High, returned home Thursday, less than a month after undergoing a bone-marrow transplant that doctors said he had only a one in three chance of surviving.
Shearer, 51, was diagnosed with leukemia more than a year ago. He has made steady progress since his transplant April 21 at UCLA Medical Center.
“So far, so good,” said Shearer’s wife, Louisville Coach Paula Getty-Shearer. “He’s doing better than anyone expected, but the first 100 days are the most critical.”

Signed, sealed: College of the Canyons catcher Jesse Daggett signed Monday with the Pittsburgh Pirates, who drafted him each of the past two years and held his rights until this year’s draft June 2.
Daggett, a unanimous All-Western State Conference pick who batted .378 with 36 runs batted in, will report in June to Erie, Pa., of the New York-Penn League, according to Pirate scout Andy Levinson.
Daggett attended Crescenta Valley High.
