Pedal to Work

Thursday is Southern California Bike to Work Day, which encourages commuters to ride bicycles to work for environmental, health and traffic reasons. Commuters who register can win prizes and help organizers log the number of participants.
* To register: Call (800) 266-6883 and choose the “carpool” option. On the Internet, sign up at https://www.bikelink.com. There is no charge to register.
* Related events: Different communities are sponsoring bike tune-up clinics, pit stops, noon rallies and “buddy rides.” For information on events in your area, call (800) 679-2453.
* Choosing a route: Scout out the best path, which may not be the same route you use in a car. Look for wide roads or bike lanes, and talk to bike riders in your office for insights. For some good paths, check the Los Angeles Times biking guide at http://fonts.nohib.com/home/destla/biking/ or contact a local bicycle club.
Other tips: Wear a helmet, bring a bike lock and plan bike storage at the workplace. In order to prevent wrinkles in your work clothes, roll them up instead of folding them, or leave a change of clothes at the office beforehand.
