SANTA PAULA — A man remained hospitalized Thursday after being shot last week by a robber who fired a gun through the front door of the man’s apartment, a police detective said.
Benito Torres, 36, was in good condition at Ventura County Medical Center after being shot in the left forearm, said Santa Paula Police Det. Carlos Juarez. He remained hospitalized for surgery, Juarez said.
Torres, a day laborer, was shot about 6 a.m. May 21 at his apartment in the 300 block of Ventura Street after the gunman and a companion knocked and then tried kicking open the front door, Juarez said.
“[Torres] doesn’t know why it occurred,” Juarez said.
Detectives believe the two men were attempting a home-invasion robbery. Anonymous sources have provided police with some leads but Juarez declined to comment further. He did say other police departments would be contacted for help.
If captured, the suspects will be jailed on suspicion of attempted murder, Juarez said.
“Even though it struck him in the arm, a mere inch away and it would have been in the torso,” Juarez said.
