Governor’s Race

* Your portrait of the electorate (Nov. 5) misses one important link in the governor’s race. Dan Lungren has bitterly fought against Indian gaming, yet your exit polls show that a clear majority of moderate Republicans supported Indian self-reliance, not Nevada casinos, by voting yes on Prop. 5.
Republicans have long supported the exact kind of individual initiative and enterprise the tribes have shown in creating tens of thousands of jobs for Californians via their huge investment in casinos. As a moderate Republican, I--and perhaps many others like me--voted for a Democrat, Gray Davis, for the first time ever solely over Lungren’s moralistic and self-righteous stance against Indian gaming.
