Belmont defeated Garfield, 23-89, to win its 14th City title in 17 years and earn a berth in the state championships. The Sentinel girls’ team also advanced to the state meet by finishing second to defending champion Van Nuys Birmingham by seven points.
Belmont senior Henry Briseno, fifth in last year’s City meet, clocked 15:04 on the three-mile course to win the individual title, holding off a late charge by Marshall’s Andre Young (15:09).
In the girls’ race, junior Valerie Flores of San Pedro pulled away from defending champion Natalie Stein of North Hollywood in the final mile. Flores, who finished second to Stein last year, finished in 17:53; Stein clocked 18:04.
