The city will become home to members of the Women’s National Water Polo Team training for the 2000 Olympics at the Los Alamitos Armed Forces Reserve Center. Residents can get to know their newest neighbors at preliminary games next month.
The center’s Olympic-quality pool, which was renovated by a joint partnership of the city, the U.S. Olympic Committee, USA Water Polo and the California Army National Guard, will become the women’s full-time training pool in January.
“This will be good for the entire community and it will be great for the younger kids,” said Mayor Ronald Bates.
The international games, called the Holiday Cup Tournament, begin Dec. 10 with matches between Australia and Canada and the United States and Brazil. The tournament concludes Dec. 13.
