News Corp. May Bid for DT’s Cable System
News Corp., the media company run by Rupert Murdoch, said it is interested in bidding for Deutsche Telekom’s cable TV system, the largest in Europe, as it seeks new distribution channels for its programming. News Corp. submitted a letter of interest to DT and is investigating the opportunities, a News Corp. spokesman said. The cable business, which serves 18 million homes, is expected to fetch $10.7 billion to $16 billion, according to German news reports and analysts’ estimates. News Corp. likely wouldn’t buy the cable system on its own, instead bidding as part of a group of companies, analysts said. The move would mark the first investment in European cable systems by News Corp., which already has stakes in German broadcasting. News Corp.’s American depositary receipts fell 63 cents to close at $29.69 on the New York Stock Exchange.
