After months of painstaking scrutiny, Irvine Unified School District trustees will go over their 1999-2000 budget one more time at their meeting Tuesday.
A $1.4-million dip into reserves may be inevitable to save the district’s unusually rich arts and science programs, finance officials said.
Other services, such as the district’s health clerk program, had to be reduced drastically to prevent a budget shortfall.
District officials noted that state funding is expected to rise by more than 4% in the coming year. But that increase wouldn’t solve the district’s financial difficulties in years to come.
“By the end of 2000-01, the district will be almost $4 million in the red,” said Deputy Supt. Paul Reed, adding that a takeover by the state would be likely in that event.
