School May Not Use All of Department Store Site

NORTH HOLLYWOOD — School officials said Friday that only a portion of the Robinsons-May department store property in North Hollywood is under consideration for construction of one of 11 primary centers planned for the east San Fernando Valley.
Instead of using the entire 24.7-acre property on Laurel Canyon Boulevard for a high school to relieve local overcrowding, district officials said they are considering using only two to five acres to build a primary center for students in kindergarten through third grade.
Los Angeles Unified School District officials are uncertain if the department store would have to be torn down to accommodate such a plan.
“Robinsons-May is a golden site,” said school board member Caprice Young, who represents North Hollywood. “We’re looking for a win-win proposal for the community, and we want businesses to prosper.”
The new plan could allow the successful store, which also houses the corporate headquarters for the 56-store Robinsons-May firm, to remain at Laurel Plaza.
