New Hazard on the 6th

A water main that ruptured Friday near the Casta del Sol golf course in Mission Viejo, above, sent water cascading down the fairways and left 500 to 600 homes with reduced or no water pressure for several hours, officials said.

The break, in a 30-inch water line near the sixth tee, was detected by the Santa Margarita Water District around noon. At left, district employees Bill Webster and Owen Ferguson hunt in the waterlogged ground for a shut-off valve.

The rupture, in an embankment on the north side of the golf course, was contained by late afternoon and left what was described as minimal damage to the course.
