Harvard-Westlake Falls Against Santa Barbara

Russell Lakey had an off night and Harvard-Westlake High’s motion offense sputtered in the fourth quarter Friday night in a 55-49 loss to Santa Barbara in the semifinals of the Thousand Oaks boys’ basketball tournament.
Lakey, who scored 71 points and made 13 of 16 three-point shots in the first two games of the tournament, played with a sprained right wrist and finished with a season-low 15 points. He made only one of five three-point shots and missed all four of his free throws.
“He fell on [his wrist] in our last game against Thousand Oaks, and it was obvious he couldn’t shoot from distance tonight,” Harvard-Westlake Coach Greg Hilliard said. “But I thought everyone stepped up and played a heck of a game. I’m proud of our effort.”
Lakey, a senior guard, scored eight of his team’s 17 points in the third quarter to help the Wolverines (3-1), ranked No. 8 in the region by The Times, overcome a two-point halftime deficit and take a 40-32 lead.
But forward Dominique Ingerson scored 12 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter to spark a comeback by Santa Barbara (6-1).
Santa Barbara outscored Harvard-Westlake, 23-9, in the fourth quarter, but led only 52-49 after Wolverine guard Craig Weinstein sank a three-point basket with 19 seconds left.
Ingerson was fouled on consecutive possessions and sank three of four free throws.
In other Thousand Oaks tournament games:
Oxnard 52, Thousand Oaks 48--Eric Webb stole an inbounds pass, was fouled and sank both free throws with two seconds left to preserve the victory for the Yellowjackets in the other semifinal.
Nicholas Curtis scored 17 points and Matt Merricks added 16 for No. 3-ranked Oxnard (6-1).
Ben Olson and Tim Chevalier each scored 11 points for No. 10-ranked Thousand Oaks (5-2).
Newbury Park 77, Saugus 76--John Harris, who scored 13 points, converted a three-point play with 10 seconds left to lift the Panthers (1-2) in a consolation game.
Oak Park 56, Channel Islands 53--Jeremy Murphy, who scored 16 points, made two free throws with seven seconds left to seal the victory for the Eagles (3-1) in a consolation game.
