Estancia’s Big Week Ends With a 1-1 Tie

After playing three top-10 teams in five days, the Estancia boys’ soccer team found out a few things. They learned that they too belong somewhere in the top 10 and, that they should probably quit reading the paper.

Estancia’s hectic week ended Friday with a 1-1 tie at seventh-ranked El Toro.

It began with a 7-0 victory over 10th-ranked Saddleback. In the middle, was a 3-1 loss to Santa Ana Wednesday, the same day a story came out about the program’s resurgence.

“They saw their pictures in the paper and they got big heads,” said Estancia Coach Steve Crenshaw, who was missing starters Omar Navarrete and Edson Anaya because of red cards. “I think I would have preferred that we remain a mystery.”

El Toro Coach Ken Sjobom said Estancia (3-1-1) is no longer a mystery.

“We had a great 0-0 game with them last year and they had nine starters back,” Sjobom said. “We knew what we were in for. They’re a top-10 team. I don’t think there’s any doubt that.”

There’s also no doubt that the two goalkeepers, Estancia’s Hilario Arriaga and El Toro’s Cameron Rossi were the story of Friday’s game. With the score tied 1-1 in the 70th minute, Arriaga made a diving save of Ryan Eggleston’s penalty shot. In the 75th minute, Rossi charged out to block a left-footed shot by Estancia’s Cesar Terrones.

“I knew where he was going,” Rossi said. “I faked to the right, so he would go left. So I was there when he went left.”

Terrones beat Rossi in the 68th minute after out-muscling a defender for the ball and slipping a grounder across the goal and into the left corner.

El Toro (2-1-1) scored first in the 45th minute on a Sem Lopez rebound of Doug Franco’s blast off the cross bar.
