Fierst Scores 27 to Help OCC Defeat San Diego Mesa

Karyn Fierst scored 27 points to lead host Orange Coast to an 86-72 victory over San Diego Mesa in women’s basketball Friday.
San Diego Mesa took a 10-2 lead, but the Pirates rallied to take a 52-33 halftime lead.
Fierst had 22 points in the first half for Orange Coast (10-1). Melissa Lewis had eight points and 10 rebounds for the Pirates.
San Diego Mesa (6-4) was led by Elizabeth Quintard, who had 17 points.
In other nonconference games:
Cerritos 79, Fullerton 68--Stacy Matsui and Monet Andrews combined for 45 points to lead Cerritos (7-3), which came back from an 18 point first-half deficit. Anabel Sanchez added 17 points to go along with the 21 points by Matsui and the 24 points by Andrews.
Valerie Matweeff scored 16 points to lead Fullerton (6-5).
Irvine Valley 53, San Bernardino Valley 42--Irvine Valley, which trailed at halftime, 32-22, outscored San Bernardino Valley by 21 points in the second half. The Lazers were paced by Laura O’Hara’s 11 points and 15 rebounds and Amy Opielowski’s 12 points and nine rebounds.
In the Los Angeles Valley women’s basketball tournament:
Ventura 76, Santa Ana 68--Santa Ana lost to Ventura for the second time this season, despite the solid play of Atari Parker who had 37 points, 11 rebounds, seven assists, seven blocks and five steals in the semifinal game.
Cypress 63, Moorpark 44--Sharee Brown scored 17 points and Triana Allen scored 12 points and handed out four assists to lead visiting Cypress (4-5).
In men’s nonconference basketball:
Santa Ana 84, San Diego Mesa 74--Zac Frey scored 16 points and Greg Gray added 14 points and 12 rebounds to lead Santa Ana.
The Dons shot 52% from the field and hit 10 of 11 free throws.
