Police evacuated the public library and closed off the intersection at Broadway and Harbor to pedestrians and motorists Monday after a library patron reported seeing a man carefully set down a box in the lobby and then quickly leave at 5:11 p.m. The library alerted the Orange County Bomb Squad to the suspicious box with tape wrapped around it. However, upon opening the box, the bomb squad determined that rather than trying to blow up the library, the man apparently wished to evade fines from an overdue backgammon set placed inside the box.
