Ventura (3-4) surprised some people with its come-from-behind victory over Crespi in the Valencia tournament Tuesday, but Coach Dan Larson doesn’t expect the Cougars to hit their stride until at least January because six players joined the team late.

Tyler Ebell, who had 21 points against Crespi, Antwaine Richards, Scott Ellis, Bryan Easterly and Jason Gruber helped Ventura (10-2) reach the quarterfinals of the Southern Section Division IV football playoffs.

Michael Derse was a member of the water polo team that reached the semifinals of the Division IV playoffs.
