LAGUNA WOODS

The city is trying to gain support from neighboring cities to get the Laguna Laurel area within its sphere of influence, City Manager Leslie Keane said last week.
She said officials will approach Laguna Beach and Irvine in January to help Laguna Woods get some amount of control over the future of this 400-acre parcel owned by the Irvine Co. bordering the Laguna Coast Wilderness Park. That land is now under the county’s jurisdiction.
The City Council passed a resolution last week supporting Proposition 12, the Safe Neighborhood Parks, Clean Water, Clean Air and Coastal Protection Bond Act of 2000. If voters approve this statewide proposition, the state will allocate $12.5 million to include Laguna Laurel into the Laguna Canyon park.
