Woman Stable After Being Shot 3 Times

From a Times Staff Writer

A 20-year-old mother who was shot three times Wednesday morning while sitting in a car with her infant near Industry may have been the victim of mistaken identity, authorities said.

The woman, who was critically wounded in the attack in the 130 block of North Winton Avenue, underwent emergency surgery at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center. She was in stable condition.

“We had thought these would be fatal wounds, but the victim’s doing a lot better,” Sheriff’s Sgt. Jack Duran said.

The 21-year-old man at the wheel of the maroon subcompact had just dropped off another man when gunfire raked the vehicle, leaving large holes in the body of the car. The woman’s 8-month-old daughter was not hit.

Sheriff’s investigators have no suspects in the shooting, said Lt. Brian Smith, nor do they know if more than one assailant was involved.

Detectives from the sheriff’s gang unit, known as Operation Safe Streets, are assigned to the case, Smith said, but a sergeant at the crime scene said the victim had no gang ties. Her name has not been released.
