Canyons Upsets Contra Costa, State’s No. 2 Team

Tasha Allen scored 35 points, including five three-pointers in the second half, and College of the Canyons upset Contra Costa, 80-70, in a semifinal game Wednesday at the De Anza tournament.
Contra Costa (20-1) is ranked No. 2 in the state. Canyons (12-5) plays defending state champion Sierra in the championship game today.
Kameelah Purdom and LeAnne Bennett each scored 14 points for Canyons.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Ventura 77, Antelope Valley 72--Desmond Penigar had 25 points and 12 rebounds, making 10 of 15 shots, for Ventura in an overtime victory in the championship game of the Canyons tournament. Penigar was named the tournament’s most valuable player.
Canyons 94, West Los Angeles 85--Anthony Ellison had 29 points, seven assists, six steals and 11 rebounds for the Cougars (7-11) in a consolation victory at the Canyons tournament.
Glendale 90, Grossmont 82--Reserve Mark Caguioa scored 16 of his 20 points in the first half for the Vaqueros in a semifinal game at the San Diego Mesa tournament.
Caguioa scored 14 points, making all six of his first-half shots, to spark an 18-2 run, during which he scored 14 points.
For Glendale (12-4), Mike Schnyder had 16 points, 10 rebounds and six assists for Glendale (12-4) and Sean Stroud scored 19 points.
San Jose City 69, Moorpark 60--O.J. Thomas had 10 points and eight assists for Moorpark in the championship game of the San Jose City tournament.
Dan Galvanoni had 17 points and was named all-tournament for Moorpark (14-4), which had a 10-game winning streak snapped by San Jose City (16-4).
BOYS’ SOCCER
Birmingham 1, Duarte 1--Gabriel Bravo stopped the last penalty kick to give the Patriots a 4-3 shootout victory in the second round of the Culver City tournament.
Allen Herriquez scored on a penalty kick in the 15th minute for Birmingham (3-3-1).
GIRLS’ SOCCER
Valencia 4, Serrano 0--Sarah Pniak and Sara Foster scored goals on assists from Courtney Morgan-Strait for the Vikings (11-2-1) in the championship game of the Lancaster tournament at the Lancaster Soccer Complex.
The Vikings defeated Alemany, 1-0, in the semifinals earlier in the day on a goal by Michelle Bontempi.
