SAN FERNANDO — A 76-year-old woman who was struck by a car as she was crossing the street after leaving church died Sunday from massive head injuries.
Shortly after 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Maria Plascencia of Sylmar was crossing at Truman and Wolfskill streets when a car knocked her to the ground, said San Fernando Police Sgt. Michael Harvey. Relatives told police that she was returning home from church.
The driver of the car, a 44-year-old man from Pacoima, looked to his left to check for oncoming traffic before making a right turn on a red light, Harvey said. The driver told police that he did not see Plascencia crossing the street until he had made the turn, he said.
“Right now, it appears that the driver is at fault,” he said. The driver of the car was interviewed at the scene and released, he said.
Harvey would not release the name of the driver, who has not been arrested.
Plascencia was taken to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills, where she was pronounced dead at 8:40 a.m. Sunday, Harvey said.
