Costs Clip WinAir’s Service to Oakland

WinAir Airlines, a commuter line based in Salt Lake City, has suspended service to Oakland International Airport, citing rising costs. The airline had originally selected Oakland, along with Sacramento, Las Vegas and Salt Lake City, as destinations from its hub in Long Beach. Service will continue to the other three cities. WinAir Chief Executive Larry Gelwix told the Oakland Tribune that Oakland flights were canceled because slumping ticket sales weren’t covering the cost of serving the city. “The cost of doing business through Oakland is one of the lowest around,” said airport spokeswoman Cyndy Johnson. “My sense is the market was not growing at the rate [WinAir] had forecast it would.”
