From Times Wire Reports
A sociologist and researcher for a prominent, left-wing Guatemalan think tank was gunned down near her house by three men on two motorcycles, police said. Human rights groups called for a full investigation of the slaying of Maria Victoria Ramirez. The killing was a gruesome echo of the 1990 stabbing of anthropologist Myrna Mack, who worked for the same Assn. for the Advancement of Social Sciences. Mack’s slaying became one of Guatemala’s most well-known human rights cases and a symbol of the political killings that marked the nation’s civil war.
