As the battle against the proposed El Toro airport intensifies, Irvine has asked other South County cities to help shoulder an additional $1.75 million to fight the plan.
“Originally, we planned to do it independently,” Mayor Christina L. Shea said. “But the bill was going sky-high. We need to work with [the El Toro Reuse Planning Authority] on it since it’s a very expansive outreach program.”
The group’s countywide public education campaign will include monthly mailers, regular newsletters and a number of newspaper and cable television advertisements that denounce the proposed airport.
The El Toro Reuse Planning Authority--a coalition of eight South County cities opposed to an airport at the former El Toro Marine Corps Air Station--will meet in Lake Forest tonight.
The group is set to decide whether each member city should contribute $175,000 more to the group’s outreach budget of $2.2 million for the 1999-2000 fiscal year.
The group meets at 6 p.m. at the Lake Forest City Hall, 23616 Lake Center Drive.
