Require Service

Re “Recruiting Drive Seen Helping Services Meet Enlistment Goals,” Aug. 1: This problem could be eliminated if it were mandatory that every citizen serve at least two years in any military branch as a way of honoring our great nation. When I grew up, military service was mandatory, and I don’t recall any of my friends complaining about it. Disabled Americans should also serve, based on their limitations.
A lot of young citizens might disagree, stating, “I have rights” or “This is a free country--you can’t make me do anything I don’t want to.” How do you think we became a free nation? Your reward for serving two years would be the fact that you enjoy living here and want to continue to receive your freedoms.
