FBI’s Investigation of Wen Ho Lee

* When I read about the latest news on the Wen Ho Lee case (“Defense Shows Holes in Case Against Scientist,” Aug. 19), my thoughts were, what has become of our country when we can indifferently and with guile accuse a person of treason? Is there no regard for a human being’s reputation and life? Where is the reverence or even respect for the law, and truth?
There have been (and still are) countries where citizens are branded as “enemies against the state,” thrown into prison to languish and are treated cruelly.
We are a majority of decent people and a remarkable nation. In order to continue to be the greatest democracy in the history of mankind, we must never equate power with justice. Power without justice is tyranny. Such a legacy for the generations following us is to guarantee that one day our descendants will live in a country filled with arrogance and with fear and oppression.
Dr. Wen Ho Lee should not have to suffer these corrosive accusations. He is entitled to bail and to be free.

In New Mexico, Robert Messemer, lead investigator of the FBI’s investigating Los Alamos scientist Wen Ho Lee, has made many “simple, inadvertent” errors that are seriously odoriferous. Why is he still employed there?
