Grant, Palmdale Chill Out With Trips to Edmonton

Whistle Grant and Palmdale highs for traveling.
With regional girls’ basketball tournaments in full swing, the Lancers and Falcons left Wednesday for the Jasper Place tournament in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
Both schools have made a habit of trekking to far-off destinations for summer tournaments, including trips to Utah, Oregon and Wyoming.
Palmdale, making its third trip to Edmonton, will also bring its boys’ team.
Alexis Weatherspoon of Grant, an All-Valley selection, has never seen snow.
“Not in person,” she said. “I’ve seen it on TV. I’m 100% from the Valley and the sun.”
It’s all part of the experience, says Coach Steve Brumwell of Grant.
“It helps bring everyone together,” Brumwell said. “The overall experience is great and, with the caliber of teams we’ve played, we come back and aren’t intimidated by anybody.”
Brumwell told his players Monday that the first night of the tournament, which runs today through Saturday, is sold out.
Not even that scares the Lancers.
But one thing might.
“I heard it might be below zero [degrees] up there,” Weatherspoon said.
