Island Idyll

What a thrill it was to look at the Travel section on Dec. 10 and see a picture of Tortola in the British Virgin Islands. In January, I spent a blissful two weeks there with my folks, in a house on a hill just around the corner from the left side of that photo. I quickly turned to Josh Meyer’s article (“Keeping Stress at Bay”) and revisited that island.
I also loved seeing the picture of Egbert Donovan, proprietor of the North Shore Shell Museum. Meyer mentioned the seashells, but he neglected to mention the restaurant upstairs. There Donovan serves up some wonderful fare prepared by his wife. One night I had delicious goat curry and on a couple of mornings, guava pancakes.

Donovan is also quite the entertainer. He had our whole family playing along with him, including him on the ukulele and me on washtub bass, as he sang and played funky music.
