Beefed-up security and the lack of people on the streets resulted in few arrests and a peaceful weekend for Laguna Beach police officers.
Laguna Beach Police Chief Jim Spreine said 39 police officers who were on duty New Year’s Eve arrested only a handful of people for drunk driving.
Many intoxicated motorists decided to take advantage of the city’s Tipsy Taxi program, in which police officers offer rides to residents and visitors staying at Laguna Beach hotels, Spreine said.
He said the city was quiet because most residents chose to celebrate the New Year at home for fear of Y2K-related problems, and people were aware of more police officers on duty.
