Get ready for the debut of the best freshman other than Steve Smith of Taft.
Derrick Williams, a 6-2 guard at Campbell Hall, is expected to make his first appearance Friday against Montclair Prep in a Delphic League showdown at Montclair Prep.
Williams starred as a freshman in the fall for Campbell Hall’s football team, then became academically ineligible. If he passes his finals this week, he will be cleared to play on Friday.
“Derrick can play at the high school level against anybody,” Coach Brian Haloossim said. “Derrick and Steve Smith play similar games.”
The game Friday should be one of the most entertaining of the season. Campbell Hall (13-6, 2-1) is led by 6-8 Jesse Foster. Montclair Prep (12-6, 2-1) counters with 6-8 Josiah Johnson.
Both teams are battling Crossroads and Pacific Hills for playoff spots. Only three teams will qualify, leaving a quality Delphic team out of the playoffs.
