A man was struck and killed by a southbound Amtrak train in Santa Ana on Friday after he apparently ignored warning bells and a lowered crossing arm, police said.
Enrique Martinez, 25, of Tustin was walking east on McFadden Avenue about 1:30 p.m., Santa Ana Police Sgt. Raul Luna said. Witnesses told investigators that the man had been carrying a brown-bag lunch when he was hit and thrown about 200 feet, Luna said. He was killed instantly.
“We don’t know if he’s deaf, had any physical problems,” Luna said. He said the man did not appear to have been wearing headphones.
The train, which was traveling about 60 mph, had just left the station in Santa Ana and was headed to San Diego. After the accident, the train, with 175 passengers, stopped for about an hour and a half, Luna said, delaying departures from Los Angeles to Orange County.
An investigation was continuing, Luna said.
