Savoring a ‘Pimpernel’

Having recently attended and greatly enjoyed “The Scarlet Pimpernel” at the Ahmanson, I am appalled by the snobbish review (“An Overhauled and Over-the-Top ‘Scarlet Pimpernel’ Lands in L.A.,” by Michael Phillips, May 5).
The show is a hoot, a welcome change from artsy-fartsy wallows in violence, misery and tawdry sex. It doesn’t take a “tourist mentality” to appreciate the excellent voices of William Paul Michals, Amy Bodnar or the wonderfully campy star turn of Douglas Sills with fine backup from the ensemble, which puts this show over the top.
Yes, the music is forgettable, but so what? The audience was brought to its feet, obviously had great fun and left the theater laughing.

I had the delightful pleasure of seeing “The Scarlet Pimpernel.” It was great. Of course it was “foppish,” it was supposed to be.
Doug Sills is delicious, but his talents are enhanced by a great cast, with marvelous voices, great costumes, captivating music and fast-paced staging.
This play is funny, moving and thoroughly enjoyable.

I found “The Scarlet Pimpernel” exceedingly enjoyable, funny and a delight--and wouldn’t mind seeing it again.
