A man who was shot by a Los Angeles Police Department officer after brandishing a pellet gun identified himself as Rudy Lopez, police said Wednesday.
The man--whose name and address police have yet to confirm--was booked Tuesday on suspicion of exhibiting a deadly weapon with intent to resist arrest, a felony.
The man was allegedly waving a pellet and BB handgun in the 10900 block of Lehigh Street, prompting residents to call authorities. When a pair of police officers arrived on the scene, Lopez pulled his weapon and was shot twice in the upper body by Officer Timothy Smith, a 19-year LAPD veteran, police said.
The man was taken to an area hospital, with injuries believed not to be life-threatening, Los Angeles Police Lt. Horace Frank said, adding that the suspect will be transported to County Jail when he recovers.
Frank said the investigation is ongoing.
