Pacifica Shuts Down La Quinta

Javon Smith rushed for 132 yards and three touchdowns in 11 carries, and Jacob Clark threw for three touchdowns as Pacifica defeated La Quinta, 54-8, Friday at Bolsa Grande High to remain undefeated in the Garden Grove League.

Breakdowns in the secondary cost Pacifica (5-3 overall, 4-0) its fourth shutout in league play, but the Mariner defense was the story.

Pacifica sacked La Quinta quarterback Giai Do five times and held the Aztecs (3-5, 2-3) to minus five yards rushing and 113 yards total. Pacifica has outscored its league opponents 176-8.

Pacifica started its first drive on the La Quinta seven-yard line after tackling the punter for a 13-yard loss. Smith ran up the middle for a touchdown on the next play.

On the following series, J.P. Lee returned an interception 20 yards to the La Quinta 17, setting up a two-yard touchdown run by Smith.

Smith’s third touchdown of the quarter, a 59-yard burst up the middle with 1:14 left, gave the Mariners three touchdowns in their first eight plays from scrimmage.

Clark took it from there, throwing touchdown passes of 24 and 15 yards in the second quarter to make it 33-0 at halftime. Clark, who completed four of eight passes for 132 yards, tossed his third touchdown, a nifty 85-yard pass to Chris Naughton early in the third quarter.

The only drama remaining was whether Pacifica could hold another league opponent scoreless. La Quinta broke the shutout on a nine-yard pass from Giai Do to Dustin Do in the third quarter.
