Jay Nichols scored all of the touchdowns Friday night to lead University to a 21-0 victory over Northwood in a Pacific Coast League game at Irvine.
Nichols opened the scoring with a two-yard sneak to finish a 67-yard drive for University (6-2, 3-0 in league), which remained tied for first with Corona del Mar.
Two possessions later, Nichols intercepted a pass from Northwood quarterback Dan Tomcheck and ran it back 18 yards for another touchdown.
After the University defense forced two more punts, Nichols broke a 79-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.
He gained 91 yards in eight carries and completed five of 11 passes for 89 yards with two interceptions.
The Timberwolves (2-6, 0-3) played tough defense in the second half of their first homecoming game.
“Northwood played inspired football tonight,” University Coach Mark Cunningham said. “They’re really going to be something else in the future.”
Northwood running back Andy Meyer rushed for 144 yards in 24 carries, but could not manage to get his team on the scoreboard.
Junior quarterback Dave Anderson replaced Tomcheck for the Timberwolves and threw for 83 yards, completing four of nine passes with one interception. Bryan Bentrott caught two passes for 73 yards and also had an interception.
Scott Pickett rushed for 91 yards in eight carries and Nephi Wheeler gained 43 yards in 14 carries for University.
