Public to Get Details on Proposed Power Plant

SOUTH GATE — Local residents will get their a chance next week to learn about a proposed 550-megawatt, natural gas power plant that is proposed for an industrial neighborhood in the eastern end of the city.
The California Energy Commission and the operators of the proposed Nueva Azalea power plant will hold the first public information hearing at 6 p.m. Thursday at the South Gate Civic Auditorium, 4900 Southern Ave.
The proposed $256-million power plant is being considered for a 13.5-acre site between the Long Beach Freeway and Garfield Avenue, south of Southern Avenue.
If approved by the California Energy Commission, the project, which is expected to create 391 jobs during construction, will be in operation by 2003.
