Lancaster Paraclete 24, Garden Grove 13--After failing to score in its first two games, the Argonauts broke their drought with a touchdown in the second quarter, but Garden Grove couldn’t stop Paraclete’s running game and lost at Garden Grove High.
Trailing 7-0, Garden Grove went on an eight-play, 67-yard drive, capped by Thomas Parrilla’s 11-yard touchdown run. On third and 10, quarterback Keo Sutherland ran an option play to the left and pitched the ball to Parrilla.
However, the ball fell behind Parrilla, who alertly picked it up, reversed his field and scored.
The tie was short-lived as Paraclete scored twice on its next two possessions for a 21-7 halftime lead.
The Garden Grove defense was unable to stop running backs Erick Jackson, Curtis Brown and Michael Washington, who rushed for a combined 189 yards in 30 carries.
The Argonauts finished with 160 yards rushing, led by Sutherland’s 67.
