Judi Garman, the former Cal State Fullerton softball coach, said Wednesday she has accepted a position as coach of the Italian national fast-pitch softball team.
Italy finished fifth in the 2000 Olympics and is the current European champion.
Garman coached at Fullerton for 20 seasons and had a record of 913-376-4.
BASKETBALL
La Quinta boys’ basketball Coach Jason Carey has resigned to spend more time with his family, Athletic Director Jim Perry said.
Carey compiled a two-year record of 11-38, including a 4-21 record last season.
SURFING
Lower Trestles provided another day of good south swells and Jeff Booth of Laguna Beach took advantage of the conditions to pull off a good third-wave score and advance to the third round of the Quicksilver Pro, a three-star World Qualifying Series event on the Assn. of Surfing Professionals tour.
Also advancing were San Clemente’s Travis Mellum and Justin Mattison.
The last five heats of Wednesday’s competition were postponed due to foggy conditions, but they will be completed today beginning at 8 a.m., with former world champion Tom Curren among those scheduled to compete.
