13 Sentenced in 1998 Attack on President

Thirteen people, including a onetime finance minister, were sentenced to prison terms of up to 20 years for involvement in an armed attack on Georgian President Eduard A. Shevardnadze in 1998.
Three people were killed in the attack on the presidential motorcade. Shevardnadze was unharmed.
The longest sentences, 20 years, were imposed on Zurab Edzhibia and Nuzgar Chukhua, who admitted that they fired on Shevardnadze’s motorcade in the capital, Tbilisi, on Feb. 9, 1998. Another attacker, Bondo Todua, was sentenced to 19 years.
Guram Absandze, a former finance minister, was sentenced to 17 years for helping finance the attack.
