Marching in the opening ceremonies of the Maccabiah Games in Israel, Todd Schayes of Englewood, Colo., carried a sign written in Hebrew: “Single male. American. Looking for Israeli wife. Contact Todd Schayes at the Tel Aviv Hilton.”

The response was astounding, Ira Berkow reports in the New York Times. Schayes, a player-coach for the U.S. 35-and-over basketball team, received more than 5,000 calls.

He also upstaged his uncle, Dolph Schayes, a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame.

“People were knocking over my uncle--one of the greatest basketball players ever--to talk to me,” said Schayes, 36, at North Carolina Greensboro.

“It’s been flattering for me, all this attention. Like I said on a Jerusalem radio program, ‘I’m just an ordinary looking guy with a nice Jewish nose. I have a great face for radio.’

“[The prospective brides] wanted to know mainly if I was serious. I told them it wasn’t a joke.”

Bobblehead theft: Some of the 15,000 Minnesota Twin fans who received Kirby Puckett bobblehead dolls in a giveaway Sunday camped out for the honor.

But somebody couldn’t wait. Up to a case of the dolls were stolen Friday night from a truck where the team stores promotional items, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported.

No one has been caught stealing.

Mind-bobbling: The craze goes on. According to Baseball America, the Boston Red Sox are the only major league team that hasn’t staged a bobblehead giveaway.

The prize for the most bizarre doll goes to the minor league New Britain Rock Cats, who honored Manager Stan Cliburn and pitching coach Stu Cliburn with a two-faced bobblehead doll.

The doll reportedly was at $21.50 on eBay recently.

All in a day’s work: Linebacker Zach Thomas of the Miami Dolphins recently appeared on “Arli$$,” the HBO series about the life of a sports agent. His scene included a kiss with a beautiful woman.

“Not only should he have taken acting lessons but kissing lessons too,” teammate Hunter Goodwin said. “I don’t think he has a shot at an Emmy. He looked a little nervous.”

The Houston Chronicle reports Thomas’ girlfriend thought the kiss was too passionate.

“It was the camera angles, but she didn’t buy it,” Thomas said. “She was a good sport about the whole thing. All her friends were like, ‘He’s really kissing her,’ but I told her I wasn’t. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.”

And finally: At 42, financial planner Dale Stoner is trying to earn a spot on the Edinboro (Pa.) University football team.

His football dreams as a young man were pushed aside by rheumatic fever and a resulting heart murmur and later, severe burns he suffered in a house fire at age 10. Now, with a doctor’s approval, he’s giving it a shot.

It’s “crazy and insane, but not in a bad way,” said daughter Katie, 17.
