Sewage Spill Closes Marina to Swimmers
The Crows Nest Marina in Newport Bay was closed to swimmers Friday after raw sewage being pumped from a ship’s holding tanks spilled into the water, officials said.
Orange County’s Environmental Health Division could not immediately determine how much sewage leaked after the pump’s line broke, but said the closure will last at least 72 hours, said Monica Mazur, a county health official.
The Harbor Patrol noticed the sewage spill and contacted the health agency at 11 a.m., Mazur said. The facility was shut down immediately. The cleanup will occur naturally as the sea water disperses the pollution, she said.
