Dotts’ Showing Helps Barons Swim to Victory

Brandon Dotts’ victories in the 200-yard freestyle (1 minute 50.30 seconds) and 100 backstroke (55.78) Tuesday helped Fountain Valley to 114 points and a victory over Mission Viejo (106) and Laguna Hills (66) in a triangular nonleague boys’ swim meet.
Dotts, whose time in the backstroke was a Southern Section Division I qualifying time, also swam the opening leg of the Barons’ winning 200 medley relay (1:46.32), which just missed a division qualifying time.
Ryan Kennedy of Mission Viejo won the 500 freestyle (4:59.28) and the 100 butterfly (58.13).
In other nonleague swimming:
Edison 118, Long Beach Poly 52--Senior Jake Steelman anchored the 200 medley relay (1:45.99), won the 50 freestyle (23.28) and 100 butterfly (56.01) and led off the winning 200 freestyle relay team (1:34.11) for host Edison (1-0).
Santa Margarita 115, Trabuco Hills 53--Jonathan Russell led the Eagles with victories in the 200 individual medley (2:26.22) and the 100 butterfly (1:06.16). Teammate Edmund Herlihy won the 500 freestyle in 4:56.53.
In nonleague girls’ swimming:
Laguna Hills 114, Mission Viejo 93, Fountain Valley 66--Katina Economides was part of two winning relay squads and won in the 100-yard freestyle and 100-yard breaststroke for Laguna Hills (1-0).
Senior Lindsay Buck, who was on two of Laguna Hills’ winning relay teams, just missed breaking a minute for the Hawks in the 100 fly, winning the event in 1:00.99.
Mission Viejo’s Sara Vass was a double winner, taking the 500 freestyle (5:23.39) and the 100 backstroke (1:02.18).
Santa Margarita 120, Trabuco Hills 50--Junior Michel Gonzalez won the 50 (26.72) and 100 freestyles (57.36) and anchored the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays for visiting Santa Margarita (1-0).
In nonleague boys’ volleyball:
Esperanza 3, University 2--Matt Nebel and Brandon Wiener had 20 kills each and sophomore-setter Tyler Rex had 60 assists for host Esperanza (1-0), in their 5-15, 15-10, 15-10, 16-18, 15-8, victory.
St. Margaret’s 3, Cerritos Whitney 1--James Edwards registered 11 kills for host St. Margaret’s (1-0), which won, 15-11, 15-5, 11-15, 15-8.
