HoneyBaby Has Teacakes
The quaint shop that produces HoneyBaby’s teacakes is so tiny that the front counter is only a step or two from the baking area. That means instant temptation as the soft, chewy cakes emerge from the oven. The recipe was developed by African American slaves, says David “Mr. David” Evans, the baker, whose family originated in Louisiana. He learned to make the teacakes from his grandmother, the original HoneyBaby. Flavors include traditional (nutmeg and vanilla), lemon, banana, pecan, almond and coconut. There are also chocolate-dipped whole teacakes and tea chips, which are cookie pieces coated with white or dark chocolate. You can buy the cookies singly or packed in boxes and baskets for gifts.
