Democratic Mayoral Candidates in N.Y. Hold Heated Debates

NEW YORK — In their last scheduled appearances together before Thursday’s vote, Democratic candidates Fernando Ferrer and Mark Green sought to distinguish themselves in a race that polls show as a dead heat.
The winner meets Republican nominee Michael Bloomberg in the Nov. 6 general election.
During two televised debates Sunday, the candidates clashed over integrity and the city’s transition after the World Trade Center attacks.
Green, the city’s public advocate, belittled Ferrer’s suggestion that the financial services and securities industries should no longer be centralized in their traditional base in lower Manhattan. Calling the idea “naive,” Green said Ferrer doesn’t understand how markets work.
Ferrer, the Bronx borough president, accused Green of breaking a pact in which the candidates agreed to refrain from negative attacks after Sept. 11.
New York Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani, a Republican, is barred by term limits from running for a third consecutive term. His term ends Dec. 31.
